Munich! My favorite city in the world. So much culture, so much history, so much beer…and even surfing…yes I said surfing!
If you want the quintessential German experience Munich is the place. When people think of lederhosen, polka, thatch houses and beer it’s Munich and Bavaria. I visited back in 2012 with my brother and instantly fell in love. The city is clean, safe, walkable, and easy to get around once you understand the winding streets.
The Englisher Garten (English Garden) is a huge park, one of the world’s largest green spaces in fact, and is a little north of the city center that runs right next to the River Isar. I highly recommend taking a bike tour through the park to see all of the sights like The Chinese tower, the beer garden, The Monopteros, and surfers riding waves on a stream coming from the River Isar. Grab a beer and snack and enjoy some wide open spaces in the middle of Germany's third largest city.
Marienplatz is probably the most famous and iconic location. It is the heart of the city center and that is where you can watch the Glockenspiel periodically each day. There you can climb the 400 or so steps of Peterskirche up to the Turm and get a 360 degree view of Munich with Marienplatz and Frauenkirche in the background.
Other sights to take in are the Olympic Stadium and grounds, Allianz Arena, Hofbrau Haus, and many many more that I can highlight in another post…I could write a novel about all the things I love about Munich…but for now I’ll say “aufedersein”.
